The Indians took to the road to open the
2010 season and traveled all the way to Norcross, GA to take on the highly talented Wesleyan Wolves. The first quarter
began with Wesleyan striking first with a long shovel pass for a touchdown. With literally seconds off of the clock,
the hosts were up 7-0, but Seminole County would not be far behind. With the help of Dee Virgin's halfback option pass
to Nate George, the Indians headed into the Wolves end of the field. Antwan Buggs called hsi own number and rushed in
from 0 yards out. Jeffery Croom tacked on the extra point and the ballgame was tied 7-7. After a defensive stand
by the Indains, a Wesleyan defender intercepted a Buggs pass and this set them up for their second score. In missing
the PAT attempt, the score went to 13-7 in favor of the #3 ranked team in the state. Buggs led the charge back down
the field and early in the second quarter the Indians struck again. Croom booted a perfect point after and the Indians
took the lead 14-13. The Wolves then drove the field on the passing arm of senior quarterback Andrew Frerking and the
legs of senior tailback Kyle Karempelis. The home team scored and after a successful two point conversion retook the
lead at 21-14. Late in the first half, an Indian fumble set up the Wolves on the Indian 10 yard line and it didn't take
much time for the Wolves to capitalize pushing the score to 28-14 heading into halftime.
The Wesleyan Marching Band presented an
entertaining halftime show during the intermission. The Green Machine was unable to attend the game. The coaches
returned with their teams after the break ready for second half action.
Wesleyan received the kickoff and began
their drive at their own 20 yard line. One play and 80 yards later, the Wolves were on the scoreboard again with a toss
sweep that ran the length of the field for a touchdown. Another PAT sailed through the uprights and the Wolves expanded
their lead to 35-14. The Indians mounted a late defensive stand and held the hosts to a 27 yard field goal and the Indians
added a late score to bring the final to 38-14 tally in favor of the Wolves. Seminole County's offense moved the ball
relatively well against the Wolves with over 200 yards rushing and right around 100 yards passing. Antwan Buggs and
Barren Rambo accounted for the majority of the rushing yardage while Dee Virgin had all but 13 yards of the passing stats
with his two halfback option passes. Both teams fought hard the entire game and impressed and entertained the crowds
on both sides of the field. The coaches selected sophomore Alex Koonce as the player of the game for his unrelenting
effort during his first full varsity game.
In talking with SCHS head coach Alan Ingram,
he commented on the effort put forth by all our players. Coach Ingram said, "We knew this Wesleyan team was good coming
into the game and we gave them a good fight early, but it just wasn't our night. We made too many mistakes against a
good team to come out with a win." He also added, "We'll go back home and work on the areas we need to improve upon
and get ready for our region opener against Terrell County." The entire coaching staff agreed that facing a top
program is good for the kids to experience. To build a better program it helps to face the kind of teams you expect
to meet up with down the road come playoff time and there is little doubt that Wesleyan will be one of those teams.
This week Seminole County hosts the Terrell
County Greenwave in the home opener as well as the region schedule opener. The Greenwave faced class AAA Monroe High
last week falling 32-12. Coach Ingram said Coach Huff will have his boys ready. Terrell County features defensive
back Tray Stephens who last year racked up 9 interceptions and snagged two picks against Monroe last week. The
Indians will also have to account for Greewave running back Basheer Rogers who piled up 54 yards in the opener. Geme
time is schedule for 7:30 p.m. at Seminole Stadium in Donalsonville for this important region clash. Make plans to attend
and support our Indians.
