Indians on top of sub-region
The Seminole County Indian football team took the field on homecoming
night facing their toughest test to date. The Terrell County Greenwave led by head coach Vince Huff and defensive guru
Jack Harris came to town with one task in mind...spoil the Indian homecoming. The pre-game ceremony began with the senior
walk as all senior band members and fall sport athletes were recognized along with their escorts. The combination of
the current SCHS Green Machine and the alumni band members performed the Star Spangled Banner and the alma mater before lining
up for the team run through. After the coin toss business was settled, the captains, Bret Ingram and Owen Parks, returned
to their team and moments later burst through the homecoming banner. The Indians entered the field of play as one, locked
arm in arm with their mentor and head coach Alan Ingram as the centerpiece. The Indians won the coin toss and decided
to kick off first and defend the south goal
Antwan Buggs put boot to leather and this vital sub-region contest was underway. The Terrell County offense
moved the ball down into Indian territory with a mixture of run and pass plays. With their backs to the wall,
the Indian defense stood their ground holding the 'Wave offense out of the end zone forcing a turnover on downs at the 1 yard
line. Luck was not on the Indians side for on the next play, Terrell County struck first as they jumped on a fumble
in the end zone. The 2 point conversion failed and the visitors led early by a 6-0 score. Tamichael Fedd took
the kickoff return to the Indian 40 yard line for their next possession. The Indian offense began their march with 3
running plays and after gaining a first down on an encroachment penalty by the Greenwave defense, they found themselves on
the Wave's 43 yard line. Antwan Buggs called his own number and barreled down the field for the game tying score.
The two point conversion failed and the score remained tied at 6 points each. From this point until halftime, both defensive
squads took over the game. Although the Indians amassed more yardage in the first half, the Terrell County defense held
them scoreless through the second quarter and took a 6-6 tie into the locker room.
The homecoming representatives were then presented to the delight of the crowd and then the stands were buzzing
when the Green Machine Alumni Band took the field. The former SCHS musicians put on a thrilling show that had the hometown
folks off of their feet with a standing ovation and loud applause showing their appreciation for the outstanding performance.
The Indians opening drive in the second half was cut short by another fumble recovered by the Greenwave.
The Terrell County offensive unit struggled to move the ball but were given new life when a roughing the punter penalty was
called. Again, as throughout the entire game, the Indian defense stuffed the Greenwave offense and punted the ball back
to the Indians. With the ball resting on the Indian 7 yard line, Owen Parks pitched the ball to Chris Brown who hit
the left corner and never looked back scoring a 93 yard touchdown run. Jeffery Croom came on to make the point after
and the Indians enjoyed their first lead of the night, 13-6. The tide was turning in favor of the Indians when on the
first play of the next Terrell County drive, Rickelle Wilson alertly pounced on a fumbled ball giving the Indians possession
on the Wave's 24 yard line. Five plays later, on a great second effort after being stuffed at the line of scrimmage,
Barren Rambo burst into the end zone to put the Indians up 19-6. A bad snap on the PAT left the score there and the
Indians were set for the next kickoff. The Greenwave then went into a 'wildcat' offensive set and began to move
the ball, but the defense stepped their effort up a notch squashing the Terrell County drive forcing a punt just as the final
quarter began. After swapping possession, the Indians broke the game wide open when Barren Rambo barreled through the
line and scampered 45 yards to put the nail in the coffin. Croom added another point after and the Indians led 26-6.
The Greenwave attempted a punt on their next drive but the snap sailed over the punter's head and through the end zone adding
a safety and two points to the Indian lead, 28-6. This is where the score was when the final ticks of the clock finally
ran out giving the Indians an all important win.
The win puts the Indians record at 6-1 (2-0) and on top of the sub-region standing heading into the biggest game
of the year with arch rival Miller County. The Greenwave fall to 3-4 (0-2) and drops them out of the contention for
a sub-region crown. With this victory, the Indians are assured of playing a 'meaningful' game in the final week of the
regular season. Next week's game against the Pirates will determine the #1 seed in the west sub-region and settle who
will host the region playoff championship game. Last year, the east side #1 seed hosted and this year it is the west
side #1 team who will host the game. In other region 1 action, Randolph-Clay earned their first win of the season by
defeating the Calhoun County Cougars 34-6, Clinch County took another step towards returning to the region championship game
by downing Lanier County 40-0, and Pelham picked up their second win of the year by downing the Bacon County Red Raiders 27-21.
Next week as previously mentioned, the Miller County Pirates come to Seminole Stadium for not only bragging rights, but the
sub-region title on the line. The Pirates were idle this week and many could be seen 'scoping out' the Indians during
the Terrell County game. Make sure you plan on coming out to support our Indians as they take on the Pirates in what
should be a whale of a game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on Friday, October 16. GO INDIANS!!!
